Tipping is a normal part of a safari in Tanzania, and guests often ask us how much is right. Here’s an honest answer.

It’s always your choice

A tip is a thank-you, not part of the price. If you’re happy with the service, tip. If you’re not, you don’t have to.

How much?

Our standard guidance for tips is around US$10 to US$20 per person per day in total. Use it as a rough guide, not a rule.

Your guide

Your guide drives you, finds the animals and looks after you every day, so most guests give the biggest share to the guide, at the end of the safari.

Lodge and camp staff

Most camps and lodges have a tip box at reception, shared among all the staff, including the people you don’t see in the kitchen and housekeeping. If someone did something special for you, you can tip them directly.

Cash or card?

Tips are almost always in cash. US dollars are fine, as are Tanzanian shillings. Bring small notes, and make sure your dollars are recent and in good condition, as older notes are often refused.

Planning your budget

Put tips in your budget from the start, together with drinks and souvenirs. Our safari cost guide shows what’s included in our prices and what isn’t.
