Almost every guest who comes on safari with us needs a visa for Tanzania. The good news is that it’s simple, and you can do it all online before you fly. Here’s how it works.

Entry rules change from time to time. Always check the official Tanzania immigration portal or your nearest Tanzanian embassy before you travel.

Apply online, on the official site only

Tanzania’s Immigration Department runs the official e-visa portal at visa.immigration.go.tz. You fill in a form, upload a passport scan and a photo, and pay by card. When the visa is approved you get an email, and you print the grant notice or keep it on your phone.

Be careful with look-alike websites. Many sites offer to “process” your Tanzania visa and charge a lot more than the official fee. If the address isn’t on immigration.go.tz, it isn’t the government.

What it costs

  • Most nationalities: an ordinary single-entry tourist visa, US$50.
  • US citizens: a multiple-entry visa, US$100.

Some nationalities don’t need a visa at all, and a few need special approval before they travel. The portal shows the rules for your passport.

How long it takes

Approval usually takes a few working days, but it can take longer at busy times. We suggest applying two to four weeks before you fly, once your flights are booked.

Your passport

Your passport should be valid for at least six months after you arrive, with blank pages for the visa and entry stamps.

Visa on arrival

Many nationalities can still buy a visa when they land at Kilimanjaro International Airport, the airport most of our safari guests fly into. It works, but after a long flight the queue can take a while. Applying online means you walk straight to the immigration desk.

Yellow fever certificate

If you arrive from a country with a risk of yellow fever, or you spent more than 12 hours in transit at an airport in one, you’ll need a yellow fever certificate. Read our yellow fever guide for the details.

Need help?

Once you’ve booked with us, we’ll send you a checklist for your arrival, and you can message your guide on WhatsApp with any question. We’ll meet you at the airport when you land.
